Ethernet Cable Colors: What They Mean and How to Plan a Color Code

Short answer. The color of an Ethernet cable's jacket carries no electrical meaning whatsoever. A blue Cat6 patch cord and a yellow one of the same specification perform identically. Color exists so that a human being standing in front of a patch field can tell one circuit from another. There is no universal standard for what each color means — there are only conventions, and the one that matters is the one you write down and stick to.

The colors that do mean something

Inside the jacket, the eight conductors are colored orange, green, blue and brown — each paired with a white conductor striped in the same color. Those are not decorative. They map to specific pins under the T568A and T568B wiring schemes, and getting them wrong is the single most common reason a hand-made cable fails.

T568A and T568B perform identically — B is more common in North American commercial work, A turns up in residential and some government specifications. What matters is that both ends of a cable use the same one. Terminate one end A and the other B and you have built a crossover cable, which modern equipment will usually sort out with auto-MDI-X, but which will confuse the next person to touch it.

Common jacket color conventions

None of these are standards. They are patterns that recur often enough to be worth knowing before you invent your own.

How to actually plan one

  • Pick fewer colors than you think you need. Three or four meanings that everyone remembers beats eight that nobody does.
  • Separate by function, not by department. Departments move; functions do not.
  • Reserve one color for "do not touch". Uplinks, the firewall pair, the out-of-band management link. Red is the usual choice for the obvious reason.
  • Write it down and put it in the rack. A laminated card on the cabinet door is worth more than a document nobody can find. Labelling and administration are what ANSI/TIA-606 actually covers.
  • Buy the same cable in several colors. Identical specification, different jacket — so a color change never quietly becomes a performance change.

What color does not tell you

Fire rating is printed on the jacket, not signalled by its color: CM, CMR for risers, CMP for plenum spaces, CMX for outdoor. Some manufacturers do favour particular colors for plenum cable, but that is habit, not code. Read the print along the cable, and let your local inspector — not the color — decide what is allowed in a given space.

Common questions

Is there an official Ethernet cable color standard?
No. ANSI/TIA-606 governs labelling and administration of a cabling system, and it uses color for the type of termination field in a telecom room — but it does not dictate what a blue or yellow patch cord means. Jacket color schemes are site conventions.

Does a colored cable perform differently?
No. The jacket compound is the same material with a different pigment. Category, gauge, shielding and construction determine performance.

Do I still need crossover cables?
Almost never. Auto-MDI-X, standard on modern switches and network cards, detects and corrects the pairing automatically. Green crossover cables are largely a museum piece now.

What color should I use for PoE cameras?
Whatever you write down — but yellow is the most widely recognised choice, and it makes a camera drop obvious when someone opens a ceiling.
