Fitting out a rack

Count the inlets (C14 takes C13 cords, C20 takes C19), feed equipment from the PDU with jumpers rather than wall cords, color-code the redundant feeds, and keep every cord the shortest length that reaches. Our guides: planning rack power, where Cat8 belongs and which fiber grade you need.

Common questions

What gauge jumper cord does a server need? 18 AWG carries 10 A, enough for most 1U servers and switches; 16 AWG for 13 A and 14 AWG for 15 A power supplies. When a supply is near the limit, go one gauge heavier.

Cat8 or fiber between switches? Under 30 m in the same room, Cat8 is cheaper and simpler. Longer, between rooms or buildings, or when electrical isolation matters, use OM4 or OS2 fiber with matching optics.
