Fiber Connector Colors and Polarity, Decoded

Fiber has a dress code, and once you know it you can identify most cables from across the room — which matters when the wrong patch simply won't link.

Jacket colors

  • Orange — legacy multimode: OM1 (62.5/125) and OM2. Match it only to existing orange plant.
  • Aqua — laser-optimized multimode: OM3 and OM4, the standard for in-building 10G+ runs. (OM4 sometimes ships in violet to distinguish it from OM3.)
  • Yellow — OS2 single mode: the long-haul fiber, kilometers of reach.

The color rule's real value is preventing the classic dead link: multimode patched into single mode optics, or vice versa. Colors differ → stop and check. Full grade-by-grade distances are in our fiber cable guide.

Connector bodies

LC (small, everywhere on modern optics), SC (square push-pull, older panels and ONTs), ST (bayonet twist, legacy). Mixed infrastructure is normal, which is why our fiber collection stocks every pairing — LC-LC, LC-SC, LC-ST, SC-SC, SC-ST, ST-ST — in both multimode grades and OS2.

Polarity: the part that catches people

A duplex link is two fibers — transmit and receive — and they must cross: one end's TX must land on the other end's RX. Standard duplex patch cables are wired "A-to-B" to do exactly that, so in a simple two-ended link, polarity just works. Where it bites is in structured plant with multiple patch panels: every segment flips polarity, and an even number of flips leaves TX staring at TX. The symptom is a perfectly good cable with no light. The fix is one crossed patch — and on uniboot LC cables, polarity can be reversed on the connector itself without tools.

If a fiber link won't come up: verify grade colors match end to end, count your polarity flips, and only then suspect the optic. Or describe the link to us — panel by panel — and we'll spot the flip.
