The History of USB: From 1.1 to USB4 — and Why USB-C Took Over

USB is the rare standard that actually delivered on its name — one universal port that killed the serial port, the parallel port, PS/2, and eventually most proprietary chargers. It took nearly thirty years, a connector zoo, and some of the worst naming in tech history to get there.

1996–2000: the original Universal Serial Bus

USB 1.0 shipped in 1996 from an Intel-led group that wanted to end the era of screwing in serial cables and setting jumpers. It ran at 12 Mbps (with a 1.5 Mbps mode for keyboards and mice) and introduced the flat rectangular Type-A plug still on billions of devices. The 1998 iMac made it famous; USB 2.0 in 2000 made it fast enough to matter, at 480 Mbps — quick for the flash drives and printers of the day.

The connector zoo years

The square-ish Type-B went to printers. Then phones and cameras shrank, and USB followed: mini-B in the early 2000s, micro-B by 2007, each smaller, each with a different failure mode, all of them one-way-only. If you ever jabbed a micro-USB plug at a phone three times in the dark, you lived this history. Micro-B's one triumph: regulators pushed it as a universal phone charger, ending the era of a drawer full of proprietary bricks — and setting the political stage for USB-C later.

2008: USB 3.0 and the blue port era

USB 3.0 (2008) jumped to 5 Gbps by adding extra data lanes — the era of blue-tongued ports and the wider micro-B "3.0" plug on external drives. Then the USB-IF spent a decade renaming things: 3.0 became "3.1 Gen 1," 10 Gbps arrived as "3.1 Gen 2," then everything was reshuffled again as USB 3.2 Gen 1/2/2x2. The practical translation: 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps or 20 Gbps — always trust the printed speed, never the version name.

2014: USB-C changes everything

The Type-C connector, finalized in 2014, fixed every complaint at once: reversible (24 pins, rotationally symmetric), small enough for a phone, big enough for a laptop. More importantly, it decoupled the connector from what flows through it — data at anywhere from 480 Mbps to 40+ Gbps, video via DisplayPort Alt Mode, and up to 100 W (later 240 W) of charging through USB Power Delivery. 2019: USB4 ties it to Thunderbolt

USB4 (2019) absorbed Intel's Thunderbolt 3 protocol, standardizing 40 Gbps over USB-C, with a 2022 revision doubling that to 80 Gbps. From here on, USB-C isn't just a port — it's the port: laptops, phones, monitors, docks, and by EU mandate, effectively every new phone sold in Europe.

Buying by the numbers, not the names
