HDMI ARC vs eARC: Getting Full Audio From Your Soundbar

The "ARC" label on one of your TV's HDMI ports means Audio Return Channel: sound travels backwards down the cable from the TV to a soundbar or receiver. One cable, no optical lead, and the TV remote controls volume. Whether you get cinema-grade audio through it depends on which version you have.

ARC: the narrow pipe

Original ARC has modest bandwidth — enough for compressed 5.1 (Dolby Digital, DTS). Fine for TV apps and casual viewing. But lossless formats — Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, and full-fat Atmos from a Blu-ray — don't fit; the TV silently sends a compressed version and your expensive soundbar never shows its range.

eARC: the full pipe

eARC (part of the HDMI 2.1 feature set) widens the return channel enormously: lossless multichannel, object audio, the works. It needs both ends to support it — an eARC-labeled port on the TV and on the soundbar — and both devices' CEC/eARC settings switched on.

The cable question, honestly

ARC works over any decent High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet — which is nearly every quality cable of the last decade. For eARC, the safe recommendation is a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable: its tested data channels remove the cable as a variable. Setup that works the first time

Consoles and players plug into the TV's other HDMI inputs (for a games console, the HDMI 2.1 input — see our console cable guide); the soundbar gets the ARC/eARC port specifically. If audio drops or lips desync: power-cycle both devices, confirm CEC is on, and reseat the cable — ARC handshakes are the flakiest thing in home theater, and nine times out of ten it's the handshake, not the hardware.
