What HDMI Cable Do You Need for a Long Run?

Long HDMI runs fail in a specific and recognizable way: the picture works at 1080p, works at 4K 30Hz, and then drops out, flickers, or refuses to handshake at 4K 60Hz. The cause is almost always bandwidth loss over distance, and the fix is either a heavier conductor or an active cable.
Why length matters
HDMI 2.0 carries 18 Gbps. That signal attenuates as it travels, and thinner conductors attenuate it faster. A 28AWG cable that is flawless at 6 feet may not deliver full bandwidth at 40. The symptom is not a gradual softening of the picture, because digital signals do not degrade gracefully. It either works or it drops to a lower mode, sparkles, or blanks out entirely.
Confusingly, a long cheap cable often appears to work, because the display negotiates down to 4K 30Hz or 4:2:0 chroma. You are watching a degraded picture without being told.
Gauge by distance
Lower AWG numbers mean thicker conductors. As a working guide for 18 Gbps:
- Up to 25 feet: 28AWG is generally fine.
- 25 to 40 feet: move to 26AWG.
- 35 to 50 feet: 24AWG.
- Beyond 50 feet: passive copper becomes unreliable at 18 Gbps regardless of gauge. Use an active cable with a built-in booster, or fiber.
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Cable quality, connector construction, and the tolerance of the source and display all affect where the limit falls.
Active and optical cables
Past 50 feet the options are an active copper cable with signal-boosting electronics in the connector, or an Active Optical Cable (AOC), which converts the signal to light and back. AOC is the more robust choice at long distances and is immune to electromagnetic interference, which matters in a conduit shared with power.
Both are directional. One end is marked source and the other display. Reversing them means no picture, and it is the most common installation error with active cable. Check the labels before you pull it through a wall.
If it is going in a wall
In-wall HDMI needs a CL2 or CL3 rating to satisfy building code. Also pull a length you can spare: replacing an in-wall cable is expensive, so if you are between gauges, go heavier.
One more practical note. Terminate before you pull if you can, or use a pull sleeve. HDMI connectors are wide, and dragging one through a stud bay by the cable is a good way to separate the connector from the conductor.
Quick reference
If the picture works at 1080p but not 4K 60Hz, the cable is the first thing to suspect. Before buying, confirm the source and display both actually support 4K 60Hz and that HDMI ports are set to the enhanced or 2.0 mode. Many TVs ship with that disabled per-port by default, and no cable will fix it.
