The History of HDMI: 1.0 to 2.1, and What Each Version Actually Changed

Every HDMI cable on your shelf is the product of two decades of one-upmanship between TV makers, game consoles and the movie industry. Knowing roughly when each version landed makes it much easier to judge what your own gear needs — and what it doesn't.

2002: HDMI 1.0 replaces a mess of plugs

Before HDMI, a home theater meant component video, composite, S-Video and a separate audio run. In December 2002, a group of consumer electronics companies (Hitachi, Panasonic, Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson and Toshiba) released HDMI 1.0: digital video and audio in one 19-pin connector, electrically compatible with the computer world's DVI standard but small enough for a TV. Bandwidth was 4.95 Gbps — plenty for 1080p at 60 Hz, which was all anyone could display.

2006: HDMI 1.3 and the console era

HDMI 1.3 roughly doubled bandwidth to 10.2 Gbps, added Deep Color and new lossless audio formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio). It arrived alongside the PlayStation 3, which did more than any device to put an HDMI port in every living room.

2009: HDMI 1.4 — ARC, Ethernet, and the first taste of 4K

HDMI 1.4 is where two features you still use were born. The Audio Return Channel (ARC) let your TV send sound back down the same cable to a soundbar or receiver — no separate optical cable. And 4K support appeared for the first time, though only at a slideshow-grade 24–30 Hz. If you've ever wondered why an old "high speed" cable technically does 4K, this is why. 2013: HDMI 2.0 makes 4K real

HDMI 2.0 raised bandwidth to 18 Gbps, enough for 4K at a proper 60 Hz with room for HDR metadata added shortly after (2.0a/2.0b). Cables certified for this era are labeled Premium High Speed. For most 4K TV setups — streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, older consoles — this remains all the cable you need.

2017: HDMI 2.1 — 48 Gbps, eARC and gaming features

HDMI 2.1 nearly tripled bandwidth to 48 Gbps using a new signaling scheme, unlocking 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz. It also introduced eARC (full-bandwidth lossless audio back to your sound system), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) — the features that make PS5 and Xbox Series X shine. Cables built and tested for it carry the Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label.

What this history means at checkout

Version numbers belong to devices; cables are sold by certification tier. The rule of thumb that falls out of twenty years of history: 1080p gear is happy with any High Speed cable, 4K60 gear wants Premium High Speed, and 4K120/8K gaming or eARC audio deserves an Ultra High Speed certified cable.
