Outdoor vs Direct Burial Ethernet Cable: What to Run Along a Fence, Under a Lawn or Through Conduit

Short answer: use outdoor-rated (CMX) cable for anything above ground that sees weather: eaves, exterior walls, fence lines and conduit that stays dry. Use direct burial cable for anything that goes in the ground, with or without conduit, and choose the gel-filled version where the trench holds water. Indoor Cat5e or Cat6 belongs in neither place. Its PVC jacket turns brittle in sunlight, cracks, and then wicks water along the pairs until the link starts dropping, usually within one to two years.

What the ratings actually mean

Outdoor / CMX. The jacket is UV-stabilized polyethylene or UV-rated PVC, formulated to withstand sunlight, temperature swings and rain. It is designed for exposure, not immersion: cable that sits in standing water will eventually take on moisture at any nick in the jacket.

Direct burial. A thicker polyethylene jacket over a core that blocks water. Gel-filled (flooded) cable packs a petroleum gel around the pairs so water cannot migrate along the cable; dry direct-burial cable uses water-blocking tape and a heavy jacket instead. Either can be laid in a trench without conduit. Gel-filled is the safer choice where the water table is high or the trench crosses a low spot.

Shielded direct burial. Adds an overall foil shield with a drain wire. Bond the drain wire to ground at the building end and the shield gives induced noise and surge energy a path away from the equipment. This is the cable for runs alongside power, past well pumps and irrigation controllers, or across open ground where lightning is a factor.

Any of these can be Cat5e or Cat6. Outdoor runs to cameras, access points and outbuildings rarely need more than gigabit, and Cat5e's smaller diameter is easier to pull through conduit, so outdoor Cat5e is the practical default.

Depth, separation and the wall

There is no national minimum depth for low-voltage communications cable, but a practical rule is 6 to 8 in for a cable nobody will disturb and 18 to 24 in under lawns, gardens and anywhere with sprinklers or future digging. Conduit is never wasted: it protects against shovels and roots and turns a replacement into a pull instead of a trench. Keep Ethernet in its own trench or at least 12 in from power cables, and cross power at right angles.

At the building, bring outdoor cable in through a sealed penetration with a drip loop outside, then transition to indoor-rated cable (CM, CMR or CMP) in a junction box or on a keystone jack. Outdoor cable is not fire-rated for interior spaces, and US code limits how far it may continue inside. Between buildings, this transition point is also where the Ethernet surge protector belongs, bonded to the electrical ground.

Terminating outdoor and burial cable

Both are solid-conductor cables, so terminate on keystone jacks or use pass-through RJ45 plugs rated for solid wire. Gel-filled cable must be wiped clean with isopropyl alcohol before it goes into a jack; the gel is harmless but it fouls contacts. Anything exposed to weather needs a weatherproof coupler or a sealed enclosure, because water finds every unsealed RJ45. The 100 m channel limit applies outside exactly as inside, so a run to a distant outbuilding may need a switch or PoE extender partway.

Common questions

Can outdoor Ethernet cable be buried? Outdoor CMX cable can be run inside conduit underground, but only direct burial cable is built to sit in soil and water on its own. If the conduit might flood, use direct burial cable inside it.
