Armored Ethernet Cable: When Anti-Rodent Protection Is Worth It

Most dead network runs don't die of interference — they die of physical damage. Rodents chew jackets, cables get crushed under equipment or stepped on, and pathways through rough spaces grind through insulation over time. Armored Ethernet cable exists for exactly those failure modes: a wound metal armor layer under the outer jacket that teeth, abrasion and casual crushing can't get through.

What armored cable actually is

Our armored Cat6A cables are standard 10G-capable Cat6A patch cables — same RJ45 terminations, same electrical performance — wrapped in spiral metal armor. You give up some flexibility and a little bend radius, and gain a cable that survives environments that destroy ordinary jackets. They're available in standard 24AWG and slim 28AWG builds, in lengths from short patch runs to room-crossing spans.

Where it earns its cost

  • Basements, crawlspaces and attics — the classic rodent territory. A chewed run inside a finished wall costs far more to replace than armor costs to buy.
  • Garages, barns and outbuildings — agricultural and workshop spaces combine rodents, abrasion and things being dragged over cables.
  • Warehouse and shop floors — anywhere a cable might be rolled over, stepped on, or pinched by moving stock.
  • Exposed wall or ceiling surface runs — where cable can't hide inside a wall and takes real-world contact.
  • Runs shared with pests' pathways — above drop ceilings and along joists, where damage goes unnoticed until the link drops.

Where standard cable is the smarter buy

Inside clean walls, in a tidy rack, or across an office floor with proper cable management, armor buys you nothing — spend the difference on better category cable or proper conduit instead. Standard Cat6A patch cables deliver the same 10G performance wherever physical abuse isn't the threat.

Choosing between 24AWG and slim 28AWG armored

24AWG is the default: lowest loss, best for longer runs and PoE loads. The slim 28AWG version exists for tight routing and dense bundles — easier to dress, at the cost of a little reach. If the run is long and hostile, 24AWG armored is the safe answer.
