This is a 12 fiber OS2 singlemode trunk cable with a female MTP connector at each end, built to carry twelve singlemode fibers between two patch panels or cassettes on one cable. It is the singlemode counterpart to the multimode MTP trunks: same high density push pull connector, but a 9/125 core on Corning SMF-28 Ultra glass for long reach. Both MTP ends are APC polished, and it is wired Type B reverse polarity on an OFNP plenum rated jacket.

Good for

  • Singlemode backbone trunking between two MTP cassettes or panels, carrying twelve fibers in place of six duplex cords
  • Plenum air handling spaces above a suspended ceiling, where OFNP is the rating code requires
  • High density singlemode builds where the patch field is APC based, such as feeding passive optical network splitters or long haul transport gear

Choosing the right fiber

  • Singlemode (OS2): a 9 micron core for long distance, from a few hundred meters up to tens of kilometers. Yellow jacket by convention
  • OM3 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 300 meters. Aqua jacket by convention
  • OM4 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 550 meters, and 40 or 100 Gigabit over shorter distances. Aqua or violet jacket
  • OM5 multimode: wideband multimode for short reach 40 and 100 Gigabit over fewer fibers. Lime green jacket

This product is OS2 singlemode with a 9/125 core and a yellow jacket, so it belongs on long distance singlemode channels at 1310nm and 1550nm. It will not work with multimode transceivers, including the 40Gb and 100Gb multimode parallel optics that the OM4 MTP trunks serve.

FAQ

Can I mix singlemode and multimode? No. The transceivers on each end have to match the fiber type, and mixing them will not pass a link. Check what the SFP or transceiver in your switch is rated for before ordering.

What is a multi fiber trunk cable for? It consolidates many fibers into one cable between two points, usually patch panel to patch panel. Rather than pulling six duplex cords, you pull one 12 fiber trunk and land a single MTP connector at each end, then use cassettes or breakout harnesses to fan out to individual connectors. It saves pathway space and reduces the number of connections you have to make and test by hand.

What does Type B polarity mean, and does it matter? Type B is the reversed method, so fiber position 1 at one end lands on position 12 at the other. Polarity has to be consistent across the whole channel: the trunk, the cassettes and the patch cords all have to belong to one scheme, or transmit will meet transmit and the link will not come up. If the rest of your channel is built to Type A or Type C, this Type B trunk is not the right part.

What is the difference between UPC and APC? APC connectors have an eight degree angled end face that reflects stray light away from the core, which gives much lower return loss. They are standard in passive optical networks and RF video. An APC connector must only be mated to another APC connector: plugging APC into UPC gives a poor connection and can damage the end face. APC connector bodies are green and UPC are blue by convention.

How should I handle the connectors? Leave the dust caps on until the moment you plug in, and never touch the end face. A fingerprint on the ferrule is one of the most common causes of a link that will not come up. Clean with a proper fiber cleaner, not with a cloth.

Both ends are female. Do I need pinned adapters? Both connectors are US Conec MTP female, so the part it mates with has to supply the pins, as cassettes and pinned harnesses do. Two female ends cannot mate to each other, so confirm what your cassettes present before ordering.
