This is an 8 fiber OM4 multimode breakout cable: a single female MTP connector at one end, fanning out at the other into four separate LC/UPC duplex legs. Use it to take a high density MTP port or trunk and land it directly on four ordinary LC duplex equipment ports, with no cassette in between. The fan out legs are 0.5m long, it is wired Type B reverse polarity, and the jacket is OFNP plenum rated.

Good for

  • Breaking an MTP trunk or panel port out to four LC duplex switch or server ports without buying and racking a cassette
  • Splitting a high density parallel port into four separate duplex channels for individual devices
  • Plenum air handling spaces above a suspended ceiling, where the OFNP rating is what code requires

Choosing the right fiber

  • Singlemode (OS2): a 9 micron core for long distance, from a few hundred meters up to tens of kilometers. Yellow jacket by convention
  • OM3 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 300 meters. Aqua jacket by convention
  • OM4 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 550 meters, and 40 or 100 Gigabit over shorter distances. Aqua or violet jacket
  • OM5 multimode: wideband multimode for short reach 40 and 100 Gigabit over fewer fibers. Lime green jacket

This product is OM4 multimode with a 50/125 core and an aqua jacket, which puts it on the longer multimode runs described above rather than on singlemode links. The listing states OM4 carries higher bandwidth and transmission rates than OM3. Multimode transceivers are required at every port in the channel.

FAQ

Can I mix singlemode and multimode? No. The transceivers on each end have to match the fiber type, and mixing them will not pass a link. Check what the SFP or transceiver in your switch is rated for before ordering.

What is a multi fiber breakout cable for? It fans one multi fiber connector out to individual connectors, so a single high density MTP port can serve several ordinary duplex ports. Here the 8 fibers behind the MTP end emerge as four LC duplex legs, each a transmit and receive pair for one device port. The alternative is a cassette in a panel, which does the same job in a fixed enclosure; a breakout cable does it in one assembly and saves the rack unit.

What does Type B polarity mean, and does it matter? Type B is the reverse method, key up to key up. Polarity has to be consistent across the whole channel: the trunk, any cassettes and this breakout have to belong to one scheme, or transmit will meet transmit and the link will not come up. If the rest of your channel is built to Type A or Type C, this Type B breakout is not the right part.

How should I handle the connectors? Leave the dust caps on until the moment you plug in, and never touch the end face. A fingerprint on the ferrule is one of the most common causes of a link that will not come up. Clean with a proper fiber cleaner, not with a cloth.

Why are there two insertion loss figures? They are measured per connector type. The multi fiber MTP end is specified at 0.35 dB or less and each LC leg at 0.20 dB or less, because a twelve position ferrule is harder to hold to the same tolerance as a single fiber one. Count both when you work out the loss budget for the finished channel.

How long are the fan out legs? The breakout section is 0.5m, measured from where the trunk splits to the LC connectors, and the length you order is the overall cable. Allow for that half meter when you plan how the four legs will reach across a switch face or a server row.
