This is a two fiber OM5 wideband multimode patch cord with duplex LC connectors at both ends, built on Corning ClearCurve OM5 glass. OM5 is the wideband grade: it is characterized at 953nm as well as 850nm, which is what lets short wavelength division multiplexing carry 40G, 100G and higher over fewer fibers. Within this range it is the only cord offered out to 50 meters, and the lime green jacket marks it as OM5 on sight.

Good for
- SWDM based 40G or 100G switch uplinks where you want the higher rate over a single duplex pair instead of a parallel multi fiber trunk
- High density LC patching in data center rows, where the OM5 grade leaves headroom for a later move to 200G or 400G on the same cord
- Long in building multimode runs out to 20m, 30m or 50m, in riser shafts where an LSZH and OFNR dual rated jacket is required
Choosing the right fiber
- Singlemode (OS2): a 9 micron core for long distance, from a few hundred meters up to tens of kilometers. Yellow jacket by convention
- OM3 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 300 meters. Aqua jacket by convention
- OM4 multimode: a 50 micron core rated for 10 Gigabit to 550 meters, and 40 or 100 Gigabit over shorter distances. Aqua or violet jacket
- OM5 multimode: wideband multimode for short reach 40 and 100 Gigabit over fewer fibers. Lime green jacket
This product is OM5 wideband multimode with a 50/125 core and a lime green jacket, so it is aimed at short reach high rate links that use SWDM optics, while remaining backward compatible with OM4 and OM3 equipment. It needs multimode transceivers at both ends.
FAQ
Can I mix singlemode and multimode? No. The transceivers on each end have to match the fiber type, and mixing them will not pass a link. Check what the SFP or transceiver in your switch is rated for before ordering.
Duplex or simplex? Duplex is two fibers in one jacket, one to transmit and one to receive, which is what most switch and transceiver pairs need. Simplex is a single fiber, used with bidirectional transceivers that send and receive over one strand.
How should I handle the connectors? Leave the dust caps on until the moment you plug in, and never touch the end face. A fingerprint on the ferrule is one of the most common causes of a link that will not come up. Clean with a proper fiber cleaner, not with a cloth.
Do I need OM5, or will OM4 do? OM5 earns its place when the optics use SWDM, because it is the grade characterized at 953nm as well as 850nm and so carries several wavelengths down one pair. On a plain 10G, 40G or 100G link without SWDM optics, this listing gives OM5 the same 550 meter and 150 meter figures as OM4. The listing also states OM5 is backward compatible with OM4 and OM3, so it can serve an existing channel.
Which SWDM distance figure is correct? The two parts of this listing differ. The bullet text says 40G and 100G reach 450 meters under SWDM, and the comparison table in the same listing says 440 meters for 40G SWDM and 150 meters for 100G SWDM. Both figures are reproduced above as the source gives them. If your design depends on the exact reach, confirm the number for your specific optics before you commit to a run length.
