Shielded vs Unshielded Ethernet Cable: UTP, F/UTP and S/FTP Explained

Short answer. In an ordinary home or office, unshielded cable is the right default — the twisting of the pairs is what rejects noise, and it does that job well. Shielded cable earns its place near heavy electrical noise: motor drives, lift machine rooms, industrial plant, long runs parallel to mains conduit, and very dense high-frequency bundles. The catch is that a shield only works if it is bonded to ground through shielded connectors and shielded jacks at the ends. An unbonded shield does nothing useful and can act as an antenna.

Reading the codes

The naming convention is overall shield / pair shield followed by TP for twisted pair. Once you know that, the labels decode themselves.

"STP" is an older, looser term that gets used for almost any shielded construction. When it matters, look for the precise code on the jacket rather than the marketing word on the box.

Why twisting already works

Each pair is twisted at a slightly different rate, so interference arriving at the cable hits both conductors of a pair almost identically. The receiver reads the difference between the two conductors, so anything common to both cancels out. That is the whole trick behind balanced twisted pair, and it is why a plain UTP cable survives running past fluorescent lights and along a skirting board without complaint.

When shielding is worth it

  • Industrial floors. Variable-frequency drives, welders, large motors and contactors put out noise well beyond what a cable is normally asked to reject.
  • Runs alongside mains power. Where separation or a separate tray is not possible, and the parallel run is long.
  • Lift shafts, plant rooms, and near radio transmitters or medical imaging equipment.
  • Dense Cat6A and Cat8 bundles. At 500 MHz and above, the biggest noise source is the other cables in the same bundle — alien crosstalk — and a shield is the most effective answer to it. This is why Cat8 is shielded by definition.

When shielding makes things worse

  • If the shield is not bonded. A shield connected at neither end is a floating conductor sitting next to your pairs. Shielded cable needs shielded plugs, shielded keystone jacks and a shielded patch panel with a path to ground, or it is just a more expensive cable.
  • If it is bonded at both ends across different ground potentials. That creates a ground loop, and current flowing down the shield is exactly the noise source you were trying to avoid. Standard practice is to bond the shield at the telecommunications room end.
  • In tight spaces. Shielded cable is thicker, stiffer and has a larger minimum bend radius. Forcing it round a corner damages the geometry that makes the cable work.
  • Where the installer will not follow through. Shielded systems are less forgiving to terminate. A well-installed UTP link beats a badly installed shielded one every time.

Common questions

Do I need shielded cable at home?
Almost certainly not. Domestic wiring, appliances and lighting do not produce the kind of interference that defeats twisted pair. Unshielded Cat6 or Cat6A is the sensible default; spend the difference on better terminations.

Is Cat7 always shielded?
In practice, yes — Cat7 and Cat7A are specified with shielding, usually S/FTP. Cat8 is likewise shielded, because reaching 2000 MHz without it is not realistic.

Can I use a shielded patch cord with unshielded wall cable?
It will link, but the shield has no continuous path, so you get no shielding benefit. It does no harm either — it is simply money spent on nothing.

How do I know if my jacks are shielded?
Shielded keystone jacks and plugs have a metal body or metal shroud rather than all-plastic. If everything in your path is plastic, the system is unshielded regardless of what the cable is.
