Bulk Ethernet Cable: Solid vs Stranded, AWG, and What a 1000 ft Box Buys You

A 1000 ft pull box is the cheapest way to buy Ethernet by a wide margin — but only if you spec it right. Bulk cable has two decisions patch cords never make you think about: solid or stranded conductors, and which jacket rating your pathway requires. Get those two right and the rest is pulling and terminating.

Solid vs stranded: the decision that determines everything else

Solid conductor cable uses one solid copper wire per conductor. It has lower attenuation (signals survive longer runs), punches down cleanly into keystone jacks and patch panels, and holds its shape in walls, ceilings and conduit. It is the correct choice for permanent, structured runs: wall drops, home runs back to the rack, anything terminated on jacks rather than plugs.

Stranded conductor cable twists several fine strands per conductor. It's far more flexible and survives repeated movement, which is why patch cords are stranded — but it attenuates faster, so it's meant for short links, not 90-meter horizontal runs. Buy stranded bulk when you're building your own patch cords or wiring things that move.

Termination hardware is matched to conductor type: solid cable wants punch-down jacks and panels; stranded cable wants RJ45 plugs specced for stranded wire. Crimping a solid-wire plug with stranded-wire contacts (or vice versa) is the classic source of flaky links that pass a continuity test and still drop packets.

Gauge: 23AWG standard, 28AWG slim

Most solid Cat6/Cat6A bulk is 23AWG — the thicker conductor keeps insertion loss low over full-length runs and carries PoE with less heat. Our bulk boxes in Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A are 23AWG solid copper, CM rated, and the Cat6 is sweep-tested to 600MHz with ETL verification.

Slim 28AWG stranded bulk exists for a different job: high-density patch fields and tight pathways where bundle diameter is the constraint. The trade-offs are shorter supported run lengths and more conservative PoE loading — fine for a patch field, wrong for in-wall home runs.

Jacket ratings: check before you pull

How far does 1000 ft go?

Plan runs on paper first: measure the path (not the straight line), add height up and down walls, and add 10–15% service slack. Typical home drops land between 50 and 100 ft, so a single box comfortably wires 10–15 drops in most houses; office runs average longer. Keep every horizontal run under 90 m so there's headroom left for patch cords at both ends.
