Cat6 vs Cat7 vs Cat8: What Actually Changed?

The Ethernet category ladder looks linear — 6, 6A, 7, 8 — but it isn't. One of those rungs is a detour, and knowing which saves you money.

Cat6 and Cat6A: the workhorses

Cat6 carries gigabit to the full 100 m and 10G over shorter runs (roughly 55 m in clean conditions). Cat6A holds 10G for the entire 100 m channel at 500MHz — it's the sensible spec for new permanent wiring. Our full comparison: Cat6 vs Cat6a.

Cat7: the detour

Here's the honest history most listings skip: Cat7 (ISO/IEC Class F) was never adopted as a TIA standard and was designed around connectors almost nobody used — GG45 and TERA — not the RJ45 on your switch. Cat7 cable sold today is fully shielded S/FTP rated to 600MHz and terminated with ordinary RJ45 plugs, which makes it behave, in practice, like well-shielded Cat6A. It works fine — our Cat7 cables are solid double-shielded cords — but buy it as heavy shielding, not as a speed tier above 6A.

Cat8: the real next step

Cat8 is a genuine TIA standard: 25G/40G Ethernet at up to 2000MHz over runs of 30 meters or less, using standard RJ45. That distance limit tells you exactly where it belongs — inside the rack and across the server room, not through the walls of a building. Every Cat8 cable is S/FTP, and it needs shielded jacks and a grounded path to deliver what it promises.

The decision in one paragraph

Wiring a home or office: Cat6, or Cat6A if you want 10G everywhere for decades. Harsh or noisy environment: shielded Cat6A, or armored Cat6A where the threat is physical. Server room, switch-to-server, under 30 m at 25/40G: Cat8. Cat7: when you specifically want double-shielded cable and it's priced right — not because seven is bigger than six.
