PoE Cable Requirements: Powering Cameras and Access Points Reliably

Power over Ethernet is the quiet workhorse of modern buildings: one cable to a camera, access point, phone or doorbell carries both data and power. But the moment a data cable also carries watts, cable choice stops being just a bandwidth question — it becomes a heat question.
The three PoE classes
- 802.3af (PoE): up to 15.4W from the switch — phones, basic cameras, sensors.
- 802.3at (PoE+): up to 30W — most modern APs and PTZ cameras.
- 802.3bt (PoE++): 60–90W — Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs, lighting, displays.
Why gauge matters more with power
Current flowing through thin copper becomes heat. One cable shrugs it off; forty cables in a tight bundle above a ceiling warm each other, and warm copper attenuates more. The practical rules: prefer thicker conductors (23–24AWG) for PoE runs, keep the highest-wattage PoE off the thinnest slim cables, and avoid huge tightly-cinched bundles for 802.3bt loads. And always pure copper — copper-clad aluminum (CCA) cable, common in bargain listings, runs hotter, drops more voltage, and isn't compliant. Distance and planning
PoE works across the same 100 m channel as data — you don't lose distance, you lose a little voltage, which the standard budgets for. Plan camera and AP drops like any other run (our bulk cable guide covers solid vs stranded and termination), mind jacket ratings in ceilings and risers, and use quality patch cords at the switch end — Cat6 or Cat6A both carry PoE happily.
