Couldn't load pickup availability
This is the stranded cable in the range, supplied as a 1000 ft pull box of Cat6 UTP. The stranded 24 AWG bare copper conductor flexes and takes repeated bending, so this box is for making up custom length patch cords rather than permanent in wall runs. Use it when you want cords cut to the exact length your rack or desk needs instead of a drawer full of factory lengths.
Specifications
- Category: Cat6
- Packaging: 1000 ft pull box
- Conductor: 24 AWG stranded bare copper
- Construction: 4-pair UTP unshielded
- Bandwidth: 550MHz
- Jacket rating: CM
- Colors: available in several jacket colors
Good for
- Making up patch cords to exact length between a patch panel and switch so the rack stays tidy
- Desk and workstation cords that get unplugged, coiled and moved
- Short jumpers in a cabinet or AV rack where a stiff solid cable would fight the bend
Which jacket rating do I need?
- CM: general indoor use, run in open air or surface raceway on a single floor
- CMR riser: vertical runs between floors, through risers and shafts. Required by code where cable passes floor to floor
- CMP plenum: runs inside air handling spaces such as above a drop ceiling or under a raised floor. The strictest fire rating and usually what a commercial inspector asks for
- CMX outdoor: exposed outdoor runs, with a UV resistant jacket
This box is CM rated, which suits the patch cord and in room work it is made for. If you are cabling a permanent run that needs a riser or plenum rating, or an outdoor run that needs CMX, use a solid conductor cable with that rating instead, since stranded cable is not the right choice for a fixed in wall run in the first place.
FAQ
Solid or stranded? Solid conductor cable is for permanent in wall runs terminated into keystone jacks or patch panels. Stranded cable flexes and is for patch cords that get moved. Using the wrong one is a common cause of intermittent links.
How is it packaged? A 1000 ft pull box that feeds the cable out as you run it, so it does not tangle or kink during a pull.
What connectors do I need? Use RJ45 plugs made for stranded conductors. Plugs designed for solid cable pierce the conductor differently and can give you a connection that tests fine on the bench and fails once the cord is flexed.
Can I punch this into keystone jacks? It is not the right cable for that. Punchdown jacks and patch panels are designed around solid conductors, so keep this box for plug terminated cords and use solid cable for anything landing on a punchdown.
