This is a 1000 ft pull box of Cat6 UTP cable with a CMP plenum rated jacket. It is the highest indoor fire rating in the Cat6 range, intended for cable that runs inside air handling spaces such as above a drop ceiling or under a raised floor. You get the 23 AWG solid copper, 600MHz Cat6 construction in the jacket a commercial inspector usually asks for.

Which jacket rating do I need?

• CM: general indoor use, run in open air or surface raceway on a single floor
• CMR riser: vertical runs between floors, through risers and shafts. Required by code where cable passes floor to floor
• CMP plenum: runs inside air handling spaces such as above a drop ceiling or under a raised floor. The strictest fire rating and usually what a commercial inspector asks for
• CMX outdoor: exposed outdoor runs, with a UV resistant jacket

This box is CMP plenum rated, the top indoor grade, so it is also acceptable where only CM or CMR riser cable is required, including vertical runs between floors. Drop down to the CM or riser Cat6 to save money when no air handling space is involved, and switch to a CMX cable for outdoor runs.

FAQ

Solid or stranded? Solid conductor cable is for permanent in wall runs terminated into keystone jacks or patch panels. Stranded cable flexes and is for patch cords that get moved. Using the wrong one is a common cause of intermittent links.

How is it packaged? A 1000 ft pull box that feeds the cable out as you run it, so it does not tangle or kink during a pull.

Do I really need plenum for a ceiling run? Only where that ceiling space moves air for the HVAC system. If the returns are ducted, the space is not a plenum and riser or CM cable can be used instead.

Anything different about pulling plenum cable? The jacket material is less forgiving of rough handling, so pull it gently from the box, keep a generous bend radius and avoid dragging it over sharp metal edges.
