Good for
- Connecting an older graphics card's DVI output to a modern HDMI TV or monitor.

- Keeping a good DVI panel in service instead of replacing it.
- KVM and rack console setups that still standardise on DVI.
Good to know
Does it carry sound?
No. DVI is a video-only connection with no audio pins on the connector, so audio has to travel separately. That is the most common surprise with this cable, and it is a property of DVI, not of the cable.
What does "single link" limit me to?
Single-link DVI carries up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz, which is why this cable is specified to 1080p at 60 Hz. Dual-link DVI adds pins for higher resolutions and uses a different pin-out.
Is any signal converted?
No. HDMI and DVI-D use the same digital video signalling, so this is a passive re-wiring rather than a conversion. Picture quality is identical to a like-for-like HDMI or DVI run.
Will HDCP-protected content play?
It depends on the display. Both ends must support HDCP for protected content; many DVI monitors do, some older ones do not, and a non-compliant display will show a blank or reduced-resolution picture.
